Faint blue objects on the Hubble Deep Field North & South as possible nearby old halo white dwarfs

چکیده
Using data derived from the deepest and finest angular resolution images of the universe yet acquired by astronomers at optical wavelengths using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in two postage-stamp sections of the sky (Williams et al. 1996a,b), plus simple geometrical and scaling arguments, we demonstrate that the faint blue population of point-source objects detected on those two fields (Méndez et al. 1996) could actually be ancient halo white dwarfs at distances closer than about 2 kpc from the Sun. This finding has profound implications, as the mass density of the detected objects would account for about half of the missing dark matter in the Milky-Way (Bahcall and Soneira 1980), thus solving one of the most controversial issues of modern astrophysics (Trimble

Faint Blue Objects in the Hubble Deep Field–South Revealed: White Dwarfs, Subdwarfs, and Quasars
We explore the nature of the faint blue objects in the Hubble Deep Field South. We have derived proper motions for the point sources in the Hubble Deep Field South using a 3-year baseline. Combining our proper motion measurements with spectral energy distribution fitting enabled us to identify 4 quasars and 42 stars, including 3 white dwarf candidates. Two of these white dwarf candidates, HDFS ...
متن کاملFaint, Moving Objects in the Hubble Deep Field: Components of the Dark Halo?
The deepest optical image of the sky, the Hubble Deep Field (HDF), obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in December 1995, has been compared to a similar image taken in December 1997. Two very faint, blue, isolated and unresolved objects are found to display a substantial apparent proper motion, 23±5mas/yr and 26±5mas/yr; a further three objects at the detection limit of the second epo...
متن کاملStarcounts in the Hubble Deep Field: Constraining Galactic Structure Models
Stellar sources are identified in the Hubble Deep Field, and accurate colours and magnitudes are presented. The predictions of a Galactic starcounts model are compared with the faint stellar counts in this field. The model reproduces the observations very well in the magnitude range 21.0 < V ≤ 26.4, while it overpredicts the counts by a factor of four in the range 26.4 < V ≤ 30.0. The luminosit...
متن کاملLimits on the Halo White Dwarf Component of Baryonic Dark Matter from the Hubble Deep Field
The MACHO collaboration lensing event statistics suggest that a significant fraction of the dark galactic halo can be comprised of baryonic matter in the form of white dwarf stars with masses between 0.1 and 1.0 M⊙. Such a halo white dwarf population, in order to have escaped detection by those who observe the white dwarf luminosity function of the disk, must have formed from an old population....

The value of the Hubble Deep Field to study of the remote regions of the observable Universe is difficult to overstate, as the many exciting results of this workshop are ample testament. However, an added bonus of the HDF is that, although it a very narrow angle survey, the depth of the HDF results in its sampling a significant volume of the halo of our galaxy. Thus it is useful for the purpose...
